“Matt Frick is one of my favorite people to play music with in Tampa” -Cory Mon

Cory Mon approved!!

I enjoy working with musicians who are ever-changing. Each day they arise and challenge themselves to get better. The sound they produce is much better than the alternative. Matt Frick is that type of musician. He attacks each day with the energy and desire to put-forth sound that will move his fans. – John Sammel

Background on matt:
Started as a kit drummer, he switched to banjo and percussion in college due to a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis.

He got deep into studying tablas and incorporating banjo with Indian music by the time we graduated IU, I think he does not play tablas anymore but still plays banjo, sings, plays guitar and keys

My name is Matt Frick. In town everyone calls me “Frick”. I’ve played with many great bands which have opened up for many big acts such as George Clinton, Santana side stage, Los Lobos, Tony Trishka, Widespread panic to name a few.
I’m currently playing in many different projects in Tampa Bay. Solo shows, several duos including Eric & Matt, Western Gypsies, duos w/ Chris Barbosa and Steve Connelly.

Full bands including Rich Sheldon Band, Western Gypsies, The Strollling Moans (Rolling Stones tribute) and Deadline ( tribute to the Grateful Dead).

I hit the scene in Tampa in 2017. I met Josh and Jenny Higgins at Love’s artifacts and was inspired to start doing my own solo gigs. At first I tried to sit in as many shows as I could to get a feel for what gigs would be like. My background has always been as a percussionist. Playing conga, marimba, auxiliary percussion and breaking out the banjo when needed. I’ve played guitar my whole life but was reborn after learning how to play the blues. Josh Higgins was just the person for me to realize that’s my calling. Soon I would meet Brad Smith a local drum legend, and Cory Mon who would take me to the next level sitting in with duos/ trios/ 4 piece gigs. Often just meeting the musicians for the first time on stage. Was a real thrill for me to break loose from my percussion background and just play electric guitar. Soon I found the courage to book my first 4 hour gig at Love’s Artifacts. The feeling was so powerful for me I set a goal to take it to the next level. It was time to add my percussion background to my guitar and banjo with the help of a serious looper pedal called the RC-505. Next thing you know I started playing at The American Legion, Mary’s, Brass Tap, Nazca Bar, World of Beer, Maloney’s, Brown Boxer, Crabby’s, Salty’s, Bonefish to name a few. As of 4/4/2021 I became a full time musician! In 2023 I played 263 shows!!!

My solo gigs I usually keep simple with an acoustic guitar, rc600 looper, wah, and a mic for vocals. I play a nice mix of classic rock, reggae and classic hits in many different genres.

I’m able to change up my style depending on the venue. In a split second I’m able to adapt to a blues, rock, jazz, folk or even outlaw country if needed. I’ve been experimenting with playing 3-4 different style sets.

For every show I make a flyer. I am a professional flyer maker, even started a flyer making business called Frickin’ Flyers. To promote my shows I use Facebook, Instagram, and gotonight.

Matt Frick Solo

My Solo shows are consistent and never disappoint.

I play a good mix of all the classic hits from the 70’s-90’s to newer hits like Tennessee Whiskey. I would say I’m Blues-Rock-Folky. I don’t play over any pre recorded tracks, I personally don’t like seeing live musicians doing that unless they are hiphop. I believe you need to create music from scratch live for everyone to see. If your venue needs a bluesy guy, well that’s me. If you venue needs a roots, folk, bluegrassy guy, that’s me. If your venue needs a good mix of all the classics, that’s me. I try to play a little of everything and can also get people up and dancing if needed! If you need jazz , I got you with the western gypsies.

Western Gypsies

Ashton Farner and Matt Frick are students of Josh Hindmarsh from Hot Tonic. We’ve created an excellent show of gypsy jazz and blues. We play at Pia’s in gulfport, Cage Brewing, Crooked Thumb, and Crislip Cafe. We often add an excellent percussionist Amor Aggari and for bigger shows we can sometimes get Keven Aland on violin (unreal musician). We will be at Sunshine Getdown April 10th in Brooksville, FL on the big stage with the full band. Our duos/trios are looking for the right venues that accept jazz and high quality music and atmosphere.
